Two 55-inch 4K smart televisions can differ in price by several thousand cedis. They look the same in a photograph and often carry almost the same name. The difference is in the model number and in a handful of specifications that shops rarely put in the title.
The model number is the product
A television's model number encodes the screen size, the series and the year. The series is the part that decides the price. Within one brand, a higher series number generally means a better panel, better processing and more features, while the screen size only tells you how big it is.
This is why PriceGenia matches televisions by their full model code rather than by name. A 55-inch 4K Smart TV from one shop and a 55-inch 4K Smart TV from another may be two different products a year apart, and comparing their prices would be meaningless.
When a listing gives no model number at all, treat the price with caution. It may be an older model being cleared.
Panel types, in plain terms
| Type | How it makes the picture | Where it suits |
|---|---|---|
| LED | A backlight shines through a liquid crystal layer | Bright rooms, lower budgets |
| QLED | LED with a quantum dot layer for richer colour | Bright rooms, better colour than plain LED |
| Mini LED | LED with far more, far smaller backlight zones | Bright rooms, deeper contrast |
| OLED | Each pixel makes its own light and can switch off completely | Darker rooms, best contrast, costs most |
For a living room in Ghana that gets strong daylight, panel brightness usually matters more than contrast. A bright QLED often looks better during the day than an OLED, even though the OLED is the more expensive technology.
What actually changes the price
- Refresh rate. 60 Hz is standard. 120 Hz costs more and is worth it mainly for sport and gaming consoles.
- Processing. The chip that upscales ordinary broadcast television to a 4K screen. Most of what you watch is not 4K, so this matters more than the headline resolution.
- Smart platform. Google TV, Vidaa, Tizen and webOS differ in which apps they carry and how long they keep getting updates.
- Tuner. If you watch free-to-air digital channels, check the TV supports the broadcast standard used here rather than relying on a separate decoder.
Size against distance
Sitting too close to a large screen is a real problem in smaller rooms. As a rough rule, for a 4K screen you want to sit somewhere between one and a half and two and a half times the screen's diagonal away from it. A 55-inch set suits a viewing distance of roughly two to three metres.
Measure the wall before you fall in love with a size. Also measure the doorway.
The extras that are not in the price
A wall bracket is almost never included. Nor is installation. Neither is a voltage stabiliser, which is worth having for an expensive screen.
If you are replacing a television after a power surge, fit protection this time. The cost of a stabiliser is small next to the cost of the screen.
Before you pay
Find the full model number on the shop's page and check it matches the one you compared. If a shop will not state the model number, ask before paying.
